Picture Frame Chalkboard

Have you ever wondered what to do with that ugly picture frame collecting dust in your garage? Have no fear, the picture frame chalkboard project is here! It is super fun and easy to do. If I could I would have a chalkboard in each of my rooms!

I would recommend doing this project in a well ventilated area with plenty of space (unfortunately I had to walk around wet frames for a couple of days because of my small apartment...but it was well worth it!). Here are the items you will need:
  • Picture frame or mirror with decorative frame. I found these two beauties at a thrift store. Maybe you have some collecting dust in your house?
  • Primer
  • Chalkboard Paint
  • Spray paint (if you do not like the color of the frame). I bought Satin Champagne Nouveau Krylon spray paint.
  • Paint brush
  • Hot Glue
  • Newspaper
  • Chalk
  • Cleaning solution if necessary
Let's get to it!

Step 1: Lay out newspaper to put the frame on. Disassemble the glass from the frame. Clean the glass and frame if necessary and allow to dry

Step 2: Prime the surface of the frame and chalkboard. Allow to dry. I had to repeat this at least three times.

Step 3: Spray paint the frames if desired. Apply three light coats and allow to dry thoroughly.

Step 4: Apply three to four light coats of the chalkboard paint to the glass. Allow 24 hours of drying time in between. The number of coats depends on how porous your backdrop is (glass isn't porous at all). If you are doing foam board, for example, it would only take two light coats.

Step 5: Apply hot glue to the inside perimeter of the frame and insert glass into frame. Allow to dry before hanging.

Voila! You have yourself a picture frame chalkboard! I placed mine in my entryway.

Enjoy!
